"Branded vs. Non-Branded Traffic: The 2026 GSC Update That Changes Everything for Your SEO Strategy"
For the past few years, the holy grail of SEO reporting has been the ability to cleanly separate branded from non-branded traffic. We’ve all been there: pouring over a 20% increase in organic clicks, only to realize it was actually a well-executed PR stunt or a viral tweet, rather than the effectiveness of your SEO strategy.
The guesswork is finally over. Google has officially rolled out the Branded Queries Filter, powered by AI, as part of the Google Search Console 2026 Update. Here’s why you care, and how you can use it to inform your strategy.
What’s New in the GSC Update?
Previously, it was necessary to use query filters to remove your brand name (and hope that you had accounted for all possible misspellings). The new update utilizes Google’s Knowledge Graph and AI to categorize queries into two types:
- Branded Queries: Include your brand name, possible misspellings (e.g., “Gogle” for Google), and even branded products and services.
- Non-Branded Queries: Pure discovery traffic. People searching for something (e.g., “best ergonomic chairs”) who happen to find you.
Branded vs. Non-Branded: Which Numbers Matter?
It’s easy to see the total clicks and think you’re doing great, but the new GSC filter shows us the real truth:
- Branded Traffic = Brand Health: If your branded traffic is increasing, then your marketing, social, word of mouth, etc., are working. People are actively searching for you. This traffic has a higher CTR, typically ranging from 30-50%, as well as higher conversion rates.
- Non-Branded Traffic = SEO Strength: This is your acquisition engine. These are the visitors who had no idea you even existed until they typed in your name after clicking the search button. This is the true measure of your content’s ability to compete in the open market.
How to Access the New Report
You don’t need to install anything. If your site is eligible (generally requires a baseline volume of traffic), follow these steps:
-
Open Google Search Console.
-
Navigate to Performance > Search Results.
-
Click the + New button in the filter bar.
-
Select Query > and look for the new Branded / Non-Branded toggle.
3 Ways to Use This Data Today
1. Identify “Hidden” Content Gaps: Filter for non-branded searches only. Look for pages that have high impressions, but a low CTR. These are pages that are ranking well for generic terms, but are not “persuasive” enough to win a click from a stranger.
2. Defend Your Brand: If your branded CTR is trending down, it may be that a competitor is bidding on your brand in Google Ads. Now you can use this data to determine whether or not to start a defensive PPC campaign.
3. Prove ROI to Stakeholders: Use the date comparison tool to demonstrate how your most recent series of blogs has increased non-branded impressions over the last 3 months. This will prove to your stakeholders that you are not just “preaching to the choir.”
What we are seeing in the 2026 GSC update is not just a change in UI. It is a fundamental change in what we are calling “Intent-Based Analytics.” Now, for the first time ever, we can stop reporting on “vanity metrics” and start reporting on real business growth.
1. What exactly is a “Branded Query”? A branded query is defined as any term that contains your company name, product name, or even misspelled versions of those names. For example, if you run a coffee shop named “Blue Sky Coffee,” then any term that contains “Blue Sky Coffee” or “Bluesky Coffee” is considered a branded term.
2. Why is non-branded traffic more significant for SEO? Non-branded traffic refers to people who were unaware of our existence until they stumbled upon our content because we had the right answer to begin with. The more people we can add to this column, the better chance we have to acquire new customers who were outside our sphere to begin with.
3. Will this new GSC update affect my actual rankings? The answer is no. This tool is merely a reporting tool, and it will not affect how we are viewed in relation to Google’s search engine results.
4. Why don’t I see the “Branded Queries” filter in my account yet?
Google is gradually adding this filter to “eligible” sites. If your site is new or doesn’t get much traffic, Google may not have enough data to add this filter for you. Keep building your traffic, and this filter will be available soon.
5. Do I need to stop working on getting branded traffic?
Absolutely not! Branded traffic is amazing because people already trust you and are more likely to make purchases. However, you should track them separately because you don’t want to get confused between “brand popularity” and “SEO growth.”
